This winter we have started our Tree Management Program around the golf course. All of this work had to be completed by the end of March
The first priority has been to remove any trees that are causing areas of shade on the tees and greens, particularly around the 4th, 5th and 6th Greens and the 4th & 5th Tees.
It is really important to ensure that the greens and tees are getting as much sunlight and wind flow during the winter months to improve the health of the greens. This helps to thaw the greens during periods of frost, thus reducing the need for Temporary Greens, but also helps to improve the health of the turf.
The trees along the brook (particularly to the right of the 5th tee) were dying and had become a health and safety risk as they could have fell down at any time. This is the reason why all of the trees in this area were removed.
Over the years the plantations around the course have become overgrown and unmanageable and so we need to bring everything back to ground level and replant some of these areas with gorse and other bushes which will enable the greenkeeping team to manage them better.
8th Hole
As you can see we have also made a start on the removal of the plantations on the right hand side of the 8th hole.
The plantation to the right of the tee is being removed to improve the view of the hole from the White Tee. We will be creating mounding between the 7th green and the 8th Tee and this will be planted with gorse and fescue grass will be allowed to grow.
The next part was to remove the plantations up and around the fairway bunkers on the left-hand side of the fairway. This is in preparation for another contractor to start Phase 2.
Phase 2 is going to involve removing the current bunkers and create a new bunker instead. This area will then be sculpted by the contractor to create a larger mound with the fairway being shaped around the bunker.
The area between the back of the 6th Tee and the 7th and 8th fairways will then be used to create a wet area to help with drainage from the 5th fairway and also the 7th and 8th fairways. The excess earth will then be used to create the mounding for the fairway bunker.
We fully understand that we have carried out a lot of work during the past few months regarding the removal of trees and plantation areas, but it is all for the longer-term benefit for the course. We also accept that the course does look very open now, but it is all part of a constructive long-term plan to improve the golf course.
